Keeping Greenwood Lake Safe, Thankful, and Caring This November
By Mayor Tom Howley

As autumn winds down and the final leaves fall, Greenwood Lake continues to show its small-town spirit of community and care. With that in mind, I’d like to share a few seasonal reminders, words of appreciation, and congratulations for one of our own.

  • Leaf drop-off is available Saturdays from 9 a.m. to noon at the Department of Public Works for Village residents only—please remember that contractors are not permitted. Bagged leaf pickup will also continue village-wide on Thursdays through November 22nd, weather permitting. Please use biodegradable paper bags, and place them curbside by 7 a.m. on pickup days. Together, we can keep our Village clean and well-maintained as winter approaches.
  • This past week, our community came together to recognize Veterans Day, and I’d like to extend heartfelt gratitude to American Legion Post 1443 for hosting a beautiful service and remembrance ceremony. Each year, they remind us of the true meaning of service and sacrifice. The turnout was strong, and it’s inspiring to see neighbors and families taking the time to pay tribute to those who have worn the uniform.
  • We also mark an important national milestone—the 250th birthday of the United States Marine Corps on November 10th. For two and a half centuries, the Marines have stood as a symbol of courage, resilience, and honor. To all Marines—past, present, and retired—Greenwood Lake thanks you for your service and for the example you set for generations to come.
  • On a sad note, our Village extends its deepest condolences to our Historian, Marilyn Hayden, on the passing of her husband, John Tracy. John was a valued member of our Village Planning Board and a lifelong supporter of Greenwood Lake’s progress and preservation. His insight, dedication, and good nature were appreciated by everyone who knew him. We send our love and support to Marilyn and her family during this difficult time.
  • As we enter mid-November, a safety reminder: Rifle season begins Saturday, November 15th. For those who enjoy hiking, walking, or exploring our local trails, please remember to wear bright orange clothing, keep your dogs leashed, and stay aware of your surroundings. These precautions help ensure everyone—hunters and hikers alike—can enjoy the outdoors safely.
  • In the spirit of giving, I’d also like to highlight that our local food pantry remains in need of donations. The demand continues to rise as we head toward the holidays, and every contribution makes a difference. Nonperishable food items, canned goods, cereal, pasta, and household essentials are always welcome. Other donations can be made in-person at the food pantry on Saturdays at Holy Rosary Church from 9-12:00 or at the Greenwood Lake Police Department. Thank you to everyone who continues to support our neighbors in need—your generosity embodies what community truly means.

Before closing, I’d like to offer a big congratulations to Clerk Katheleen Holder’s son, Joe Holder, who scored a goal in the SUNYAC Championship men’s soccer game against Buffalo this past weekend! Joe is a senior forward for the SUNY Oneonta Red Dragons, and his efforts helped lead his team to an incredible victory. The Red Dragons will now advance to the first round of the NCAA playoffs, where they will face Babson College on Saturday, November 15th. Congratulations to Joe and the entire team on their continued success—we’ll be cheering you on from Greenwood Lake!

As Thanksgiving approaches, let’s all take a moment to appreciate what makes Greenwood Lake such a special place: our volunteers, our small businesses, our first responders, and, most of all, our residents. It’s the way this community looks out for one another—through every season—that keeps our Village strong.

Have a safe, peaceful, and caring week, Greenwood Lake. And as always, thank you for being part of what makes our Village such a wonderful place to call home.

See you around town,
– Mayor Tom Howley
